Anjelo's Production Workshop 6

For this week I started on songwriting after finishing the melodies and different parts of the song. At first I wanted to go for the 2 verse 2 chorus but then I realised that my melodies were all keeping this one mood and at the same time, the vocals just takes away too much attention from the instrumentals so I kept it to a shorter verse with fewer words. It was the melody of the vocals that kept tripping me up because for once the vocals weren't the main focus so I tried out different melody lines but it often sounded more vibrant as compared to the instrumentals. Eventually I tried to keep the vocals low and near monotonous. For the lyrics I just kept it neutral, nothing too direct nor indirect as compared to my older projects. I had some time to spare so I tried to implement something I learnt recently which helped to make the keyboards sound more ambient. Because of that it ended up adding more character to the piece as a whole. Any time I had left I just spent it trying to mi...

For this week I didn't have any bookings. It never ceases to surprise how bookings slots were all just instantly filled up on the day the mission was given. Lucky for me most of the instruments I used were MIDI.  I mostly focused on the instrumentals and tried using different instruments which were prominent in different genres. I tried giving the baseline in the song a funk/groovey kind of beat which were prominent during the 1970s. While for the synths, I used patches which were prominent in leading lines similar to that of EDM. Next is another instrument often used in jazz which is the jazz organ. I combined the sound with the electric piano to give it a much fuller sound. it sounded pretty empty so I added in a string drone note. Thats pretty much the base of my song.

We've received the mission for this week which was to expand on our 45 second concept. Of course when I heard it I thought I'm pretty much screwed since mine is based other people's songs. So I sat there wondering what I could do and it occured to me that my topic is based on genres so I thought, why not mix up genres and try to blend them together? Because of that I researched on what genres I could try and use that could work together.

Anjelo's Production Workshop 3

I learnt quite a couple of knick-knacks like special chord movements from Dong Heng which was pretty enriching. After that I learnt that the most popular presentation was incorporating a style that famous musicians use and trying it out for oneself to see whether or not one can achieve the same effect. This could come in the form of beats, it could also perhaps come in a kind of technique like how Dinz used automation to help him in his tracks. Though I learnt a valuable lesson for my case. There were a lot of main points that I missed out that would've saved my presentation like stating how I didn't know how to create renditions and that I had this fixed mind-set of how things usually went. I thought it was more of 'improving' upon the song by changing as much things as possible when actually its just fixing the style to fit myself.
